Mount Pleasant

Between 16th Street and Rock Creek Park, just north of lively Adams Morgan, is the serene, almost bucolic Mount Pleasant neighborhood. Its name goes backmore than 200 years, when a large parcel of land on the heights above the new Federal City was first called Mount Pleasant. In the early 1800s a popular racetrack was built on the site, and Columbian College, the predecessor of the George Washington University, was established here in 1820.

The streets were named for colleges, universities and scholars, and some of them, particularly Harvard street, still exist. During the early 1860s the area was still countryside, and President Lincoln and his wife enjoyed carriage rides along what is now Mount Pleasant Street, the neighborhood commercial strip.

Today, Mount Pleasant is a culturally diverse neighborhood, reflecting the recent arrival of immigrants from Asia and, particularly, Latin America. The Latino Community Heritage Center, located in the Latin American Youth Center at 1419 Columbia Road, tells the stories of these migrants' new lives in the nation's capital.

Not only is Mount Pleasant a richly diverse neighborhood, it's convenient too - there are plenty of grocery stores, and convenience stores and bakeries. Best Way Supermarket, Argyle Convenience Store, 7-Eleven, and Heller's Bakery are right around the corner.

Restaurants nicely reflect the multi-cultural influence of the neighborhood. Haydee's, Eastern Empire, and Kenny's BBQ are just a few of the local flavors right outside your door.

And to top it all off, the Columbia Heights Metro stop is just a few blocks away!
